Weather

Although in terms of area Costa Rica is small, there are many things that happen with the weather. Costa Rica has a diverse and varied climate that can be divided into several climate zones, each one different and individual. Generally classified as a tropical country due to proximity to the equator, Costa Rica does not have a real winter period and the sun shines throughout the year. With more than 12 hours of sunshine since the sun rises at 5:45 a.m. and gets at approximately 5:45 p.m.

The main reason why Costa Rica has such diversity is because it is located in the middle of an ocean and a sea and that these are relatively close to each other, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Of course, elevation also plays a very important role in the diversity of climates. For example, Guanacaste  which is adjacent to the Pacific Ocean has a dry climate where there are many dry tropical forests, while in  Tortuguero, which is in the Caribbean Sea about 210 km away in a straight line, has a very humid climate With rainfall during most of the year.

The Central Valley along with San Jose enjoy the best climate of the country since the temperature is in average in 22 degrees Celsius and with a temperate breeze that comes from the coast. In the mountains the average temperature is 13 degrees Celsius while in the lowlands or at sea level, the average temperature is around 26 degrees Celsius, with hot days and stifling sunsets.

In Costa Rica the average annual temperature is between 21 and 27 degrees Celsius and the coldest months of the year are November, December and January. The months from March to May are the hottest months of the year. So please be sure to protect yourself from the sun.

Actually in Costa Rica there is no winter or summer and the rainy season lasts from May to November with little or no rain during the months of December to April. While the country's average rainfall is about 100 inches, in some mountainous sites rainfall can reach up to 25 feet per year. It is important to note that Costa Rica's Caribbean coast is relatively unique and has its own microclimate. With an interchange of winds that keep the climate hot and humid most of the year, without a season really dry and with very frequent rains.
